The Brief

These striking groyne structures on Portobello Beach, just 5km from Edinburgh city centre, were installed back in the 1970s. A now familiar and loved part of the landscape, they were unfortunately damaged as a result of Storm Arwen in November 2021. One groyne in particular was quite severely damaged and rotated. Covanburn was appointed to carry out all the necessary repairs and restore the groynes to their former glory on Portobello Beach.

What We Loved About This Project

These kinds of structures become such recognised parts of the landscapes they occupy. These man-made additions to the natural surroundings becomes so familiar that they feel as natural as the sand and sea. When they become damaged or compromised, the prospect that they could be lost can be genuinely upsetting or unsettling for people. Being part of restoring and strengthening them is a great feeling.
