Description of works
Portobello Beach lies on the South Bank of the Firth of Forth, 5km from Edinburgh City Centre. Beach parapets were installed in the 1960s to combat flooding events in some parts of the frontage. Groyne structures were later installed during the early 1970s as part of the beach renourishment scheme. As a result of Storm Arwen in November 2021, one of the groyne structures, Groyne 4, was damaged and rotated. The damaged structure was to be repaired, andmaintenance to the other Timber Groynes to be conducted where defects have been identified.

The groynes have been redeveloped and brought to their former glory giving an enhanced offering to visitors, reflecting its setting on Portobello Beach. The newly restored groynes will be crucial to protect certain parts of the coat and maintain upper beach stability.
