After a substantial sinkhole appeared on a public pathway in the Longstone area of Edinburgh Covanburn was appointed to make the necessary repairs and strengthen the structure for the future.
The path was closed when the sinkhole appeared, which caused great inconvenience to the public. To complicate matters further, the ownership of that specific piece of land was unclear and research first had to be carried out to establish whether it was private or public land before The City of Edinburgh Council could appoint a contractor to carry out repairs.
Once those investigations were complete and we were appointed, we got to work. The pathway was beside a retaining wall next to the Water of Leith, and a period of prolonged wet weather and erosion along the riverbank combined to create the conditions for collapse of the ground around the wall, causing the sinkhole.
We repaired the damage and strengthened the scour protection, and the path was re-opened to a delighted public.

We knew the closure of the footpath had been a source of real frustration for local residents, and that questions over ownership of the land had made that closure feel particularly long. It was great to deliver the project and get the pathway back open for the public.
