Glen Esk Urban Greenspace, Glasgow

We’re proud to have recently completed a truly transformative project at Glen Esk, delivering a vibrant new outdoor space for the local community.

Appointed as principal contractors by South Lanarkshire Council under the NEC3 Framework, Covanburn Contracts led the delivery of the Glen Esk Urban Greenspace project an initiative funded by the Scottish Government’s Vacant and Derelict Land Fund.

Once a disused landfill site, the area has now been revitalised into a safe, welcoming and multi-use greenspace designed to promote wellbeing, activity and biodiversity.

Key features of the project included:

Challenges and Innovation

This project came with its fair share of challenges. The site had a network of live services, but with limited records available, our team had to take a particularly careful and methodical approach. Excavating through the old clay cap from the site’s landfill days also added complexity, requiring specialist techniques and a bit of extra time to get right.

We wanted the walls to have the look and feel of traditional dry stone, so we used clever construction techniques that kept mortar to a minimum, giving us the strength we needed without losing that classic, heritage style.

A New Chapter for Glen Esk

The result is a fully rejuvenated greenspace that supports native planting and habitats, encourages outdoor activity, and provides a safe, accessible environment for local residents and visitors alike. From cycling and walking to learning and exploring, Glen Esk is now a space the community can truly be proud of.

We’re delighted to have played a part in bringing this project to life and helping turn an underused site into something that will benefit generations to come.
