Renewal of Culvert at Beinn Dorain

Client Network Rail
Value £30,000
Location Argyll and Bute

Requirements

Beinn Dorain Culvert (310/152F) was a fireclay pipe culvert located on the West Highland Line (WHL) between Upper Tyndrum and Bridge of Orchy at 45m 1500y.

The existing pipe had been crushed, fractured, and partially collapsed. The downstream end was also completely blocked by localised embankment slip.

Approach

Scope of works:

  • Delivery of materials to remote location along rail line.
  • Replacement of failed culvert pipe beneath the rail line with new MDPE pipe.
  • Construction of new inlet and outlet headwalls including cascade.
  • Track monitoring following installation of new Under Track Crossing.
  • Tamping of track to final design levels.
  • Landscaping around culvert

Result

The works were completed on time, despite being carried out in a remote location and during the winter months.

Works were carried out during both dayshift working and also during periods of possession of the rail line.

As our engineers had an input in the design, Covanburn were able to change the headwalls from precast concrete to being constructed in engineering brick. This made transporting of materials more simple.
