The historic St Columbkille’s parish in Rutherglen dates back to 1851 and the current church building opened in 1940. The parish was founded at a time when Irish immigrants were arriving in the West of Scotland in huge numbers as they fled the Great Famine in Ireland. Most of the Irish immigrants were Catholic and churches were important for these new communities as they settled in Glasgow and surrounding areas.
In the modern day St Columbkille’s Church, a striking building which sits prominently on Rutherglen Main Street, remains a very active place of worship.
We were tasked with the formation of a new landscape for the church forecourt, including raised steps, a ramp around the main entrance, electric light infrastructure and installations, and soft landscaping in the grounds.

St Columbkille’s has a rich history but it is also very much still an active place of worship with parishioners who are active in the community. The works we completed helped to give a more modern, relevant feel to the grand, historic church building, reflecting its ongoing status in the area.
