CCL were appointed as Principal Contractors by North Lanarkshire Council to construct the new Ravenscraig Active Travel Links under Glasgow City Council’s Construction and Trades Framework (Contract Reference GCC004481CPU. The site is located within the old steelworks site at Ravenscraig Motherwell which is now being redeveloped for multi-use including housing, sports recreation and social use. Creating travel links North to South from Meadowhead bridge to Robberhall rd. roundabout.

  • Earthworks – cut/fill of 6000m 2
  • Footpath construction – 4500m 2 of full construction including capping
  • Scottish Water diversion – 315m of 150mm rising main and connection to existing
  • Street Lighting & CCTV – 3000m of ducting and chambers, 47 lighting columns, 14 CCTV masts
  • Landscaping – Extensive tree and shrub planting and creation of wild flower meadows

Challenges

  • Working with contaminated soils
  • Ecological issues including badger setts, bat roosts and preservation of existing rare tree species
  • Translocation of 14no goat willow trees
  • Dealing with unforeseen buried structures associated with the old steelworks
  • Access and egress off busy main traffic artery
  • Working adjacent to a live regional sports centre
  • Maintaining access throughout the works for SPEN to the substation
  • Designing scheme to minimise impact of the surrounding area
  • Maintaining access to the existing borehole test points

Project Outcomes

The project was successfully delivered in May 2022, 3 weeks ahead of programme and within budget. Its completion successfully delivered the first phase of the Ravenscraig Active Travel Link, the aim of which is to link the new communities within the site and to encourage active participation in walking and cycling. Environmentally, compensatory planting replaced those green areas which were removed to allow construction. Community benefit works were carried out at Berryhill Primary School, Motherwell. Operatives employed as part of the projects community benefit agreement have been retained.
