The St George & the Dragon statue at St George’s Cross is a historic piece of civic art dating back to 1897 and depicts a mixture of historical fact and historical fiction.
St George – the patron saint of England and a Christian martyr – is cast as the brave warrior fighting a mythical dragon. The statue originally sat atop a shop building in Glasgow but was placed in storage in 1980s when the building faced demolition. In 1988 it was re-erected as a stand-alone monument.
Unfortunately the statue is at the mercy of the elements and the wet, damp, cold and windy weather in Glasgow is a challenge even for the brave St George. Our work at the statue involved using our specialist Doff stone cleaning capabilities to freshen its appearance.
We are an approved contractor for the non-abrasive Doff cleaning system, which uses gentle steam cleaning to remove paint, staining and discolouration. It is hugely effective at restoring stone structures with 0% surface damage.
