Peel Park is a public park opened in 1898. It sits on an elevated site above Kirkintilloch and offers stunning views over the surrounding area.
The park is a place of historical importance too – the line of 2nd century Roman Antonine Wall runs through it.
Cast-iron features including a bandstand, drinking fountain and 12 historic lampposts were all manufactured by Kirkintilloch’s Lion Foundry, famous during the Victorian era for its decorative ironwork.
These items were beginning to show signs of deterioration and a need was identified to preserve them for future generations to enjoy.
The Covanburn Contracts team used their extensive experience in restoration to successfully repair and restore The Bandstand, Hudson Fountain and Lamp Posts.
The Bandstand
The wrought and cast iron ballusters and gates were prepared and repainted insitu. Individual repairs were carried out on the zinc roof, seams and the finials to the collar of the dome. The steps were then repaired and repointed.
Lamp Posts
The wrought and cast iron lamp posts were manually prepared by removing loose paint layers, scraping out rust build up and then repainted to match original colours. The electrics, light fitting and bulbs were checked and to ensure they were operational.
Hudson Fountain
We cleaned the fountain to remove accumulations of dirt, algae and lichens. Loose paint layers were removed manually and rust build up was scraped out. The fountain was then repainted to match the original colours.
Peel Park plays a key role in Kirkintilloch’s vibrant heritage and culture. This wonderful restoration work helps bring the park’s fascinating history to life. All the structures look stunning and it's great to see them restored to their former glory.
