Humpback Bridge at Botanic Gardens

Client Glasgow City Council
Value £180,000
Location Glasgow

Requirements

The contract was to refurbish the Class B listed Humpback Footbridge, which spans the River Kelvin, in the city’s West End, and included structural repairs and painting.

The humpback bridge makes up part of the Kelvin Walkway, which runs from Belmont Bridge in the heart of the West End to the old railway bridge over the river.

The walkway has a fantastic history, and takes in some fascinating sites along the River Kelvin, juts a stone’s throw from Glasgow Botanic Gardens.

Approach

Key elements of the bridge maintenance and refurbishment works included:

  • Repairs to cast iron parapets
  • Strengthening of the two main plate girders and replacement of corroded rivets
  • Removal of existing surfacing
  • Removal of cladding
  • Blasting and painting of all steelwork
  • Reinstatement of deck

Although the bridge had to be closed while works were carried out, informative signage, including an alternative route, were displayed in the area to ensure as little disruption as possible to visitors and walkers.
