The Brief

Working at the Glasgow Necropolis is really more of a journey for us than a project. For more than 15 years we’ve worked with Glasgow City Council and the Glasgow Friends of the Necropolis to carry out major restoration and maintenance works of this world-famous gothic cemetery. We’ve restored and refurbished numerous vaults and mausoleums in the Necropolis, almost too numerous to count.

We carry out stonework, cast iron work, devegetation, cleaning and painting. We offer a full rounded service to assist in the restoration and preservation of the Necropolis while also making the busy tourist attraction fit and proper for the present and the future.

What We Loved About This Project

The Necropolis is very special to us here at Covanburn. Not only is it a historical treasure trove – it’s one of few cemeteries to keep detailed records of its inhabitants stretching back to the 1800s – it’s also like a museum or architectural and design greatness. It hosts monuments designed by major influential architects and sculptors including Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomson, Charles Rennie Mackintosh and JT Rochead. There have been 50,000 burials across its 37 acres, including tombs up to 14 feet deep.

It is a genuine honour to play a part in the preservation of such an important and visually breathtaking place of history.
